Artist's Statement
The subject of landscape is complex and engages my interest throughout a range of aesthetic and spiritual concerns. The natural world represented is not a “given”. There is active choice involved in observing, selecting, transforming and, finally, inventing the view that the artist presents.
The normal manner of looking at our surroundings seems to highlight or focus on specific details, often in a shifting sequence. When I select the components of a landscape composition I “freeze” those elements into a broad view. The scope is grand, sensations of light and shape are often exaggerated in an effort to capture the essence of the scene. The natural configuration of the land and evanescent qualities of weather and time of day become the partners of abstract pictorial composition.
